The Marriage entry for this couple shows wife's name as Rachel Jay, a spinster.
Efforts have benn unsuccessful to prove without a doudt that this is the same
person as rachel as Rachel Pierce, whom family tradition says married Peter
Sargent, and who married John Jay, widower, Widower, on Apr 10, 1798. Her
signatures in both cases have been compared by several and seem identical. Mr.
A.W. Russell, researcher from Maidenhead, Berks. states in letter to Ruth White
dated 25 oct 1981, "Ihad a look at the original entries of the marriages of
Rachel Pearce (1798) and Rachel Jay. Together with others we agmost certainly
the writing is the same." Rachel was a widow, therefore, not a spinster, when
she married Peter Sargent. Searches in several surrounding parishes and his
home parish of laverstock, wilts., for John Jay's death have been unsuccessful.
Marriage bonds and allegations in Berkshire were destroyed in World War II.
